Peter Scannel in his 505 crewed by Charles Dwyer took line honours in both races, but Ronan Kenneally in his Laser won the event on handicap.

Any parents with RIBs may wish to launch and provide back up to rescue.

Looking forward to seeing you on the water."

Click here for entry form - Return to Monkstown Bay Sailing Club before Saturday 1st October.

All Dinghy sailors,

The September Class I and Class II Dingy League is yet to get some racing in due to the changeable Irish weather.

The first Saturday (3rd) was abandoned because of a lack of wind - the fleets were unable to make the weather mark against the ebb tide. And last Saturday (10th) was blown out with 24 knots gusting over Monkstown Bay.

To facilitate the rugby enthusiasts among us we have postponed the First Gun next saturday to 12.15. This should give you all ample time to celebrate Ireland's win against Australia and make it to the Sandquay and rig.

Sailing news

All sailors,

1) This Tuesday August 30th is the final racing of the evening Dingy Leagues for this season. Congratulations to all those who got out on the water this summer. Hopefully we will see you all on the water for September and October. Summer league results will be posted on the MBSC website next week

2) September Class I and Class II racing will commence next Saturday morning, First Gun @ 10.30. There will be 2 races each Saturday - 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th for each Class. We will have boat starts, with sailing instructions on the Sandquay at 10.00.

3) The October League will be run on Saturday afternoons with First Gun @ 14.30. It will be for the first four Saturdays in October 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd.

We look forward to seeing you all on the water.

All Dingy sailors - Coughlan Trophy - Thurs July 21

The mixed dinghy Coughlan Trophy is on this Thursday 21st for all Class I & Class II dinghies.

Hennessy Cup - Saturday 23rd July

With HW at 11:19hrs and ebbing until 17:56 hrs, the Hennessy Cup will take place for the first time this Saturday, in memory of Charlie Hennessy, who gave much to the worlds of sailing, theatre, cinema, the arts, and to the legal profession.

Briefing on the Sandquay at 14:00hrs, FG 15:00hrs, BBQ and refreshments 17:00hrs onwards. Please spread the word to any acquaintances of Charlie's who may not be on this circulation. And once again, a plate of tapas per couple to accompany the burgers etc., would go a long way to making it a memorable day and evening!! More details here.

Thursday racing

35 boats in the bay racing last Thursday!!  6 Cruisers, 18 Class 1 and 11 Class 2 ! A nice turnout last week - thanks to Jelly Baby and Kevin for doing the honours (Jelly Baby will now be west until the end of August).

A long course was set for the cruisers and the fleet battled a strong ebb tide on a beat upriver, resulting in three boats retiring, and only Don crossing the line by 2100hrs. Voyager 1 and Sally managed to finish after 2100hrs and the prizes went in the order of finishing. There are two Thursdays left in the Vagabond Overseas series, tomorrow (21st) and next week.

MBSC At Home - Saturday July 9 - Dinghy Results

27 mixed dingies took to the waters of Monkstown Bay for the annual MBSC At Home. It was difficult for OD Bryan Hassett to set a course in a falling tide and light, variable, thundery conditions. Apologies must go to Class I who did not get a true beat from Coleen to a laid mark in Raffeen Creek.

The regatta was a great reflection of how strong a family club MBSC actually is, with many of the prize-winning boats being helmed and crewed by members of the same family.

RSFeva Munster Championships

A fantastic weekend of dinghy racing was held in Monkstown Bay the weekend of 25/26 June when MBSC was host to the RSFeva Munsters. 18 boats competed, with sailors from Howth, Blessington, RIYC, RStGYC, RCYC, and CSC. The standard was superb and the OD, our own John Crotty, set great courses in challanging breezes, particulary on Saturday.

Congratulations go to Grattan Roberts and crew James McCarthy who won the overall event. The next significant event for the RSFeva is the Nationals in RCYC in mid August.

All Aboard That Floats

Next Saturday May 28th, all club members, friends and families are invited to the city Marina for our annual club outing to Cork—"All Aboard All That Floats". This event is designed to encourage all club boats to partake in a gathering and upriver rally, with the city Marina reserved and at our disposal for the afternoon. The club will provide crash boat facilities for dinghies,

With the tide flooding until 15:16hrs, I propose we gather at the sand quay from midday and get on the water en masse. I feel it is important to demonstrate how vibrant and enthusiastic a club we have and would encourage all to partake in this event if possible. The cruiser class will provide tows downriver and will host a BBQ at the club from 19:00hrs, directly after the Munster rugby match. Looking forward to seeing you on the water next weekend!

John O' Driscoll, Commodore

Blessing of the boats

The  Traditional Blessing of Boats will be held in Passage West on Sunday at 3pm. There are some other events going on at Toureen that day to celebrate 100th Anniversary of the shooting of a local fisherman.

May Tuesday leagues begin in earnest

The May Tuesday league began in earnest on May 3rd, in a blustery cold 14 to 18 knot south easterly. A phone call between the OOD and the Sailing Secretary at 18.10 ended with a decision not to sail given the conditions. But three experienced Laser sailors appeared on the Sanquay and were very keen to get on the water and start competing for trophy's.

Results:

1st Place   Laser Sail #  54297 John Moynihan
DNF           Laser Sail # 173070 Colm Killeen    Retired
DNS           Laser Sail # 81891 Vince Cassidy   Retired

As the flags were being lowered and put away in the hut 'til Thursday, Johnny Wallace arrived with his beautiful Albacore in tow, ably assisted by Conor Kelly. Johnny will make the FG on Thursday evening, as the committee hope all the club's dingy sailors will.

May league (dinghys)

Dinghy racing for the season will be on Tuesdays & Thursdays. May league starts for Class I and Class II dinghies on Tuesday May 3rd - FG 19.00 - OOD Ciaran McSweeny. Sandquay start; course to be decided by the OOD each evening.

Many Class I dinghy sailors have expressed an interest in moving from Thursday to Friday, so we will explore this - the idea is to monitor numbers on Thursdays and survey preferences as the season progresses.

May league (cruisers)

Cruiser league racing startsThursday May 5th.

"Like mighty eagle soaring light, O'er antelopes on Alpine height.
The anchor heaves, the ship swings free,  The sails swell full. To sea, to sea!
"
         Thomas Lovell Beddoes

Tony Canny Memorial event

This is being moved to the Bank Holiday Sunday 5th June. It will take a gathering format, as Tony was a great "rafter upper" and one to enjoy the craic to be had anchored off a beach - if some would like to race to the gathering venue in Tony’s honour, we will organize that too.

It would be nice to gather ashore after a nice day on the hook to make the trophy presentation, be that a marina or the club for a BBQ and craic. Otherwise, all ashore at Ringabella for a campfire and BBQ there.

MBSC Optimist Open Sessions

The MBSC Optimist open sessions are re-commencing on Sunday 17th April and will run for 9 weeks (excluding Easter Sunday) until June 19th. The sessions are open to children between the ages of 7 and 13 years. They are very “fun focused” and have proven to be a gentle way for kids to get involved in sailing while also acing as a stepping stone to the ISA level 1 course.

Places are limited so we advise you to book your child’s place early. The cost per session is €8 per child for paid-up members and €10 per child for non-members.

The group will be divided into Beginners, Intermediate, and Experienced. Richie Harrington and Maeve Bradley will be coaching again this year after a very successful Autumn 2010 league. Briefing on the Sand Quay at 10 am each Sunday; de-briefing at 12.30 pm.

Please complete this form and return it as soon as possible to: Ruth Mc Sweeney, 2 Marine Villas, Monkstown, Co Cork (086 2698324), along with a copy of your insurance certificate if you are a boat owner.
