Class 2 Parents - Information Session

Interest has been expressed in an information session focused on the progression of junior sailors.

The club proposes an information session to brief parents on the types of boats and the types of racing that typically takes place in Ireland involving younger sailors. We would hold this session in the club (about 1 hour duration) if enough people are interested.

If you would be interested in attending such a session, please email Ronan Kenneally at mbscsailing@gmail.com.

Tom MacSweeney Retires from RTE

The Officers and members of MBSC wish to extend their warmest wishes to Tom MacSweeney, our long time member and friend, who retired from RTÉ on Tuesday November 10th.

Tom is a man of many firsts – first RTÉ Regional Correspondent, first RTÉ Marine Correspondent and first Class Captain of the MBSC Cruising Class, a class which he strove to form and which has gone from strength to strength since its inception.

Known in all harbours of Ireland from Killybegs to Kilmore Quay, Crookhaven to Carrickfergus, Tom will still be heard on his popular "Seascapes" programme, which he will present until Christmas. We are sure a man of Tom's talent will still be reporting in print and on air on all things maritime, and we wish Tom and Kathleen every success and fair winds in the future.

Optimist News - 23rd October 2009

Oppie coaching will NOT go ahead this Sunday as strong winds are forecast - so that wraps up the 2009 season.

Many thanks to everyone who helped in running the sessions to date, in particular to Caitlin Cuppage who did a tremendous job coaching the kids on Sundays and who also provided us with a crash boat.

It is our intention to put together a program for the Spring of 2010 catering for both the younger and more experienced Oppie sailors. Details to follow in due course. Lorna Hyde will continue to oversee the more experienced Oppie group, while Bryan Hassett has kindly agreed (with a little gentle persuasion) to oversee the younger Oppie group from now on.

Oppies are super boats in which to learn sailing skills and promote solo sailing under safe conditions. Our older group proved very competitive in both the September and October leagues and one seems to be in an overall leading position - testimony to the fine job carried out by Jack Crotty in coaching the more experienced group. Class racing is exciting and we would encourage those of you who have still got Oppies to do your best to persuade your kids to join in again in the Spring. The cut off age is 14 years. We promise to make it a much fun as possible, for all ages.

If there is anyone you think may be interested in joining the group, please give them Lorna's email address. Let's build a strong fleet; these kids are the future of our club!

Enjoyable & informative Navigation Evening

A great attendance on Tuesday Oct. 6th for an Informative Navigation Evening with Eddie English, with 10 cruiser class boats represented.

Eddie shared his wealth of knowledge on all aspects of navigation, including some novel and very accessible means of passage planning. The internet has certainly enhanced the breadth and speed of demonstrations such as these and Eddie delivered a huge range of weather tips, planning tools, and chart and mapping platforms with great ease.

Congrats to Eddie on 35 years as a professional sail, power and nav instructor, and check out www.sailcork.com for many of the tools and websites that Eddie demonstrated.

As Eddie gave his time for free, the €5 nominal charge for attendance raised €120 for the RNLI. Many thanks to all who attended this most enjoyable evening!

The October League begins on Saturday 3rd October..

MBSC Honours Club Stalwart at Inaugural Goldie Cronin 'Alta to Starboard to Finish' Trophy Event

MBSC paid tribute on Saturday, Sept. 26, to a stalwart of the club, with the biggest turn-out of Cruisers for the season. Sixteen boats took part in a special event, while at the same time over 30 dinghies competed in the club’s September League.

The event honoured ‘Goldie’ Cronin, who served for many years as Race Officer for the Vagabond dinghy fleet, which was formerly a mainstay of the club.

‘Goldie’, now in her 80s, also acted as Race Officer for the Cruisers when that fleet was formed in Monkstown. One of her particular rules was that the class should finish all races, leaving the Alta race mark to Starboard, as they turned to head for the finish line off the Sand Quay. This ‘rule’ provided an opportunity for spectators to see the fleet and created a lot of interest in the village.

Keeping their plans secret from ‘Goldie’, the Cruiser class had a special trophy designed, a replica of the old Alta race mark.

At the inaugural event on Saturday, where ‘Goldie’ was again Race Officer, with Alan Fleury assisting, the trophy was awarded to husband-and-wife team Niamh and Peter Welland.

‘Goldie’ was totally surprised by the tribute to her. Club Commodore, Finian O’Driscoll and Cruiser Class Captain, Brian Kelleher presented her with a specially-framed photograph of herself and her late husband, Jim, taken while they sailed a Vagabond at Alta in the 1970s.

“Goldie is an example of the best kind of person which clubs need. We are very grateful for her long-service to Monkstown and her commitment to sailing,” the Commodore said.

Navigation Evening with Eddie English (Tues 6th Oct.)

Eddie English will visit MBSC on Tuesday October 6th at 19.45hrs, for an informative evening on navigation techniques. Eddie will cover traditional and modern navigation methods, will advise on safety and back-up aspects of passage making and planning, and will relate some stories from his trips and races around the world.

This is intended to be an informal and fun couple of hours. We will use the Founders Room for comfort and the bar will open for tasty beverages after the session. The nominal €5 entry fee will go to the RNLI. All welcome.

Hugh O'Reilly and Coughlan Trophies

Sun and 15+ knots provided quality sailing conditions today in Monkstown Bay.

After negotiating around many capsized boats, Ewen Barry and Charles Dwyer won the dinghy Trophy, first presented in 1976 by Ned Coughlan, owner of "the shop" in Monkstown Village.

Michael Coughlan and his crew won the cruiser trophy donated to the club by Nuala O'Reilly. The compass binnacle was owned by Nuala's late father Hugh, whom the trophy is named after.

Thanks to all who assisted with rescue, race organisation, and BBQ. Special thanks to Nuala O Reilly who provided the prizes (including signed copies of the book "Seascapes" by Tom MacSweeney).

Amendment to Sailing Instructions

Due to the confined nature of the club's racing area, any boat racing under the flag of MBSC must be crewed by a minimum of TWO competent persons. The only exception is single handed dinghies, e.g. Lasers.

Also, prior to the first gun the race officer will inform the fleet of any expected movement of commercial traffic in the vicinity of the race course for the expected duration of the race.
