Dinghies September League
September league for Class 1 and Class 2 dinghies starts Saturday Sept 4th.
- Class 1: First Gun at 14:30 and 1 all "in race" is planned. To accommodate the Cork Harbour Open Day, sailors who participate in the Cobh to Blackrock race will be given "average points for the series".
- Class 2: First gun is at 15:00. 2 races are planned.
Note: Boats should have sail numbers displayed on both sides of the sail (numbers should be higher on the starboard side). Without a sail number, it can be difficult to allocate results correctly - so please make sure your boat has them!
Cork Harbour Open Day
Cork Harbour Open Day takes place on Saturday 4th September 2010. This event is a great opportunity to celebrate and discover Cork Harbour and all it has to offer.
The programme of events includes tours of Blackrock Castle’s Tower, an Atlantic Sea Kayaking event, the Cobh to Blackrock Sailing race, a car boot sale (Monkstown, Sunday), free tours of Spike Island, and meet the RNLI crew in Crosshaven. The World Rescue Challenge (WRC) takes place at Custom House Quay. Click here for further details.
Ireland claims victory in blustery Rolex Commodores' Cup finale
Ireland has done it. The Irish boats Antix, Marinerscove.ie and Roxy 6 have secured the Rolex Commodores' Cup for the emerald isle. For full information and results go to http://commodorescup.rorc.org/.

Dinghies Class 2 September League
The Class 2 September League starts Saturday 4th and will run for the 4 Saturdays of September. 2 races per day are planned, and FG will be at 15:00.

MBSC Sailors at 2010 Laser Connaught Championships
This year the Connaught trophy was presented by the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire. Four MBSC sailors participated in the 5-race series. Conditions varied from 0 to 25 knots, sometimes during the same race!
MBSC participants were Peter Cave, Charles Dwyer, Ronan Kenneally, and Paul O Sullivan.

Coughlin Trophy
The annual Coughlan Trophy was held on Thurs 29th, as part of July league racing. This was an 'all in' race for the Coughlin Trophy, which was presented to the club in 1976 by Ned Coughlin, owner of "the shop" in Monkstown Village. This makes the trophy one of the oldest in the club. Click here for full results.

Coughlin Trophy
The annual Coughlin Trophy is being held tomorrow (Thurs 29th July) night, as part of July league racing. FG, as usual, is 19:00.

There will be full tide (definitely) and sunshine (hopefully), so try and get on the water if you can.
MBSC Club Picnic
The annual club picnic takes place this Saturday (24 July). The venue is White Bay and there will be a dinghy race from the club line at 13:00 for Classes 1 and 2.
BBQs will be provided at White Bay - just bring some food!

MBSC 'At Home', Tony Canny Memorial Trophy & Kinsale Cruiser Visit
Saturday June 26th: What a successful and fun day for the club!. Beautiful weather, a bay full of cruisers and dinghies, and the clubhouse full with members and visitors all day.
- A great show of Class 1 and Class 2 dinghies for the 'At Home' races and various championships.
- A fleet of RCYC cruisers raced to the bay from Crosshaven.
- The KYC cruisers made their annual pilgrimage to Cork, via MBSC for a sumptuous lunch.
- The inaugural Tony Canny memorial event drew a great crowd, with the Tony Canny memorial trophy being presented to Peter and Niamh Welland, as best mirroring Tony’s love of the sea, of cruising, and of “pushing the fun button”.

MBSC Sailors at Laser Leinster Championships 2010
Paul O'Sullivan was 9th and Ronan Kenneally 7th at a breezy Laser Leinsters, hosted by Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club at the weekend (July 3/4). 27 full rigs and over 70 radials and 4.7s were competing. Click here for full results.
Class 1 June League
Congratulations to John Wallace & Michelle Hughes who won the June League 2010 sailing an Albacore. The pair are deserved winners of the Black Prince Tophy for 2010.

Class 1 June League - Tuesday 15th
For tonights race, Ciaran McSweeney set a course in Monkstown Creek, avoiding the strong flood tide in the channel and fishing nets by strand road. The winds were light but all 11 starters received a finish time. The largest class were the lasers with 6 boats racing.
Tonights race was won by John Wallace and Conor Kelly in an Albacore. 2nd was Colin Johns in a Laser, and 3rd was Tony Bruen in another Laser.
John Wallace now leads the league overall from Ronan Kenneally. Click here for full results.
MBSC Junior Training Courses
Sailing course for following levels starts Monday June 21st:
- Level 2: Basic skills. Sailors become more competent at basic sailing manoeuvres.
- Level 1 & 2 (combined): Start sailing and Basic skills (over 12s only).
- Level 3: Improving skills A. Sailors focus on rigging, capsize recovery, sailing knowledge, boat handling, coastal knowledge and weather.
- Level 4 - Racing: Sailors specialise in racing preparation and techniques. Modules include, Kites & Wires, Advanced Boat Handling, Go Racing 1.
Sailing course for Level 1 starts Monday June 28th.
MBSC Laser Summer Open - Day 1 - June 5th
7 full rig lasers were on the water today for the Laser Summer Open - Day 1. Thanks to RO John O'Gorman for running todays event, held in a very light and shifty southerly, and an ebb tide. Due to the fickle breeze, only 2 races were sailed. Results as follows:

Tuesday 26th race was won by Joanne & Charles McCarthy in a 505. Thanks to RO Ewen Barry for shortening the race just before the wind died completely! Ronan Kenneally was second in a Laser and John Moynihan was third in another Laser. Final race will be held on Thursday 28th.
Class 1 May League - May 20
Eleven Class 1 boats were on the water on May 20. PRO Ivan Wolfe set a 3 round course in Monkstown Creek. A very strong tide meant that the boats sailing closest to the shore made it to the windward mark first. The race was won by Ronan Kenneally in a Laser. John Wallace & Michelle Hughes were second in an Albacore, and Gavin Lynch-Frahill was third in another Laser. With 2 races remaining, the overall standings are as follows:

Class 2 May League - May 20

Blessing of the Boats
The traditional Blessing of the Boats, which had been an annual event in Passage West, is being revived. It will take place at the Top Quay, Passage West, on Sunday at 3 p.m. Rowing fishing, sailing and motorboats are all welcome at the ceremony.

The 2010 cruiser season kicked off on Thursday 13th May, with 5 cruisers on the water. Sandquay cleanup - Saturday May 1 at 10:30
A sandquay cleanup is taking place this Saturday May 1 at 10:30. If you can spare the time, please come armed with weedkiller, shovels etc ! Thanks in advance.
Easy Ferry Cup - Saturday May 1
The East Ferry Cup is an annual event run by Cove Sailing Club for Class 1 and Class 2 dinghies. A trophy is awarded to the winners in each class. Usually sailors from all 3 Cork Harbour clubs participate.
The race starts opposite the promenade in Cobh and finishes in the East Ferry River (via specified course marks). First Gun for the 2010 race is at 14:00 this Saturday 1st May.
So far, there may be up to 5 MBSC lasers and 5 MBSC 505s participating this year. Any MBSC sailors planning to participate should contact Ronan Kenneally (086 3115930), so we have an idea of the rescue and towing home requirement!
Queen Mary Sailing Club - Laser Open 2010
MBSC Member Ronan Kenneally and former member Roger O'Gorman competed in the Queen Mary Sailing Club Laser Open 2010, which was held on Saturday April 24th, on the Queen Mary Reservoir in London.
Ronan Kenneally finished in 12th and Roger O'Gorman finished in 15th position from a fleet of 51 boats. For full results click here.
MBSC Spring Laser Open (Day 2) - Sunday 11th April
Day 2 of the MBSC LaserSpring Open took place on Sunday 11th April in warm sunshine and 7 - 10 knots.
Paul O'Sullivan won the series overall with a 4,5,4 on Day 1 and a 2,1,1 on Day 2. In second place was Gavin Lynch-Frahill (RCYC).
Well done to Paul and thanks to all who assisted with the event.
2010 Laser Munsters
5 MBSC sailors competed in the 2010 Laser Munsters, held by Baltimore Sailing Club, over the Easter weekend. 137 Boats took part in total, including 85 juniors.
5 races were held in cold conditions and moderate breezes. Results were as follows:

MBSC Junior Training Courses - Applications now being Accepted
MBSC run a sailing course each year, over a three week period in June/July. The course caters for sailors ranging in age from eight to eighteen and provides a variety of ISA Certified Levels to suit particular ages and sailing ability. In 2010 the courses run from Monday 21st June to Friday 9th July.
Applications are now due. Please return completed form and deposit as soon as possible.

ISA President's Award for Tom McSweeney
Congratulations to Tom MacSweeney who was recently presented with the ISA President’s Award as a token of appreciation in recognition of his services to sport of sailing. The ISA President’s Award is awarded entirely at the discretion of the current ISA President and Board in recognition of the activities or involvement of one or more individuals who have committed to the sport in an outstanding manner.
Brian & Eleanor Cudmore - Lofoten Islands Cruise Presentation - Thur 18 March
Brian and Eleanor Cudmore have kindly agreed to present a slideshow of their cruise to the Lofoten islands, 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The night will be a fundraiser for the RNLI at their request, with a token €5 per person requested.
All are welcome, and anyone serious about sailing long distances, equipment appraisal, higher latitude navigation, stores, supplies etc. will have a lot of questions answered.

MBSC Spring Laser Open
This event will be held on Saturday 6th March. First Gun is at 12:00 and there will be no start after 15:00. 3 races are planned and the Race Officer is Ciarán McSweeney.
Lasers, Laser Radials and Laser 4.7s are eligible to compete. Sailors of all levels are welcome and the event is also open to juniors.
The intention is to have the start line as close to the Sand Quay as possible but please be on the water in time for the First Gun.

Kinsale Frostbite Series 2010
After 6 weeks and 12 races, the 3 MBSC sailors competing in the series finished as follows:

This was a very successful series for Kinsale, with over 40 dinghies on the water each Sunday. As usual, Kinsale Yacht Club did a great job running the event.

'Sunshine Sailing' Presented by Eddie English - Tues 9th Feb
A informative evening for sailors of all levels of competence, presented by Eddie English, sailor and Yachtmaster Instructor.
The evening begins at 1930hrs and finishes at 2130hrs, the fire will be lighting, refreshments available, and Eddie will take questions from the floor. This evening is all about getting to the sun and doing some sailing there! Eddie will cover the 3 popular ways:
- Sail to the sun - sail from Cork to France or Spain - including a little on passage planning and suitable arrival ports in France and Spain.
- Charter (fly and skipper) - qualifications needed, pitfalls - what to watch for! Planning.
- An organised package – eg: Sunshine Cruise with a Sailing School -skipper will know area - including bars and restaurants! Learn from a Yachtmaster skipper at any level, a great way for beginners to get a taste of sailing.
Rig and Deck Demo - 12th Feb - with Expert Harry Lewis
This should interest all sailors in the club and will take place on Friday 12th February at 20:00hrs in the Cadet Room. Expert Harry Lewis will cover all aspects of rig and deck maintenance, correct tensioning, mast rake, and will also concentrate on winch maintenance, block maintenance, running and standing rigging, swages etc.
The demo will include stripping a yacht winch to it’s component parts, servicing it, and reassembly.
We hope to see as many as possible in attendance. Tasty beverages afterwards.
OSTAR Interactive Lecture by Barry Hurley - Thur 25th Feb
On Thurs Feb 25th at 8pm in the Club Bar, Barry Hurley, renowned international sailor from Cobh will present a very informative and interactive evening on his Transatlantic race last year.
In June 2009 Barry completed the Original Singlehanded Transatlantic Race (OSTAR), from Plymouth (UK) to Newport Rhode Island (USA), finishing the race in just under 21 days, 5th over the water, 4th overall, and 1st in class.
He has now begun a series of interactive lectures in clubs around the country, using photos, chart detail, and video taken during the race to describe the race itself, and telling his personal story of racing for 21 days alone at sea.
A free presentation, Barry will hand around an RNLI collection box afterwards, in an attempt to raise much needed funds for the RNLI in Ireland. Any money he raises will be matched by his employer O2.

Rig and Deck Demo - 12th Feb
This should interest all sailors in the club and will take place on Friday 12th February at 20:00hrs in the Cadet Room. Expert Harry Lewis will cover all aspects of rig and deck maintenance, including winch maintenance, block maintenance, running and standing rigging, suages etc.
MBSC Winter Laser Open (Sat 9th Jan)
The MBSC Laser Winter Open 2010 was held on Sat 9th January in a 6-8 knot north easterly. Seven hardy Laser sailors put on their wooly hats and wetsuits in preparation for a 3 race series in Monkstown Bay.
Race Office Ciaran McSweeney set a 3 round port hand course in the mooring field and races averaged 25 minutes in duration (due to the lower than average temperature!).
Thanks to race officers Ciaran McSweeney and Colin Barry. Also thanks to Sandy Rimmington for providing rescue cover.

Class 2 Parents - Information Session
Interest has been expressed in an information session focused on the progression of junior sailors.
The club proposes an information session to brief parents on the types of boats and the types of racing that typically takes place in Ireland involving younger sailors. We would hold this session in the club (about 1 hour duration) if enough people are interested.

MBSC Winter Laser Open - Going ahead as planned (Sat 9th Jan)
The first event on the 2010 calendar will be the MBSC Winter Laser Open on the 9th January 2010. All Laser rigs can compete (Standard, Radial and 4.7).
First Gun at 12:00 and all sailors should be on the water for 11:45 to ensure a prompt start. There will be three races in the bay, with no start after 15:00.
The courses will be advised by Race Officer Ciaran McSweeney from the committee boat. The prizegiving will take place at 16:00 in the clubhouse.
Please dress appropriately for some chilly northerlies!!
Amendment to Sailing Instructions
Due to the confined nature of the club's racing area, any boat racing under the flag of MBSC must be crewed by a minimum of TWO competent persons. The only exception is single handed dinghies, e.g. Lasers.
Also, prior to the first gun the race officer will inform the fleet of any expected movement of commercial traffic in the vicinity of the race course for the expected duration of the race.
